Water Purification for Emergency Storage was created by bill144
For water purification can some one help me figure out how manuy drops of unactivated mms I would need to put into 5 gallons of water if I wanted to store it for emergency use for say 5 - 7 years? Also, should I wish to use activated mms, how may drops of activated mms (chlorine dioxide) would it take to do the same thing, and also with the activated mms would that be straight activated mms without being undiluted with water? Thanks

Hi Bill,
For clear water that would be 1 - 2 drops UNACTIVATED per gallon, for cloudy water 3 - 4 drops/gallon. Water will be 'safe' in 8 hours. Don't use activated MMS for storage (citric acid or other food acids will feed stuff).
To purify water fast for using, you can use 3 activated drops per gallon and wait 10 minutes.

Hi SunSun, welcome to the forum!
The sodium chlorite should kill any pathogens in the water. If it's clear and free from sediment, there's no reason that it should store safely for years if the container it's in is sealed.

why unactivated?
with just ONE drop of activated mms a 5 liters of water will be purified in 1 hour.
but 6 activated drops will do it in 15 minutes.
sodiun chlorite is the old way to purify water when camping.it takes 24 hours, and cannot compare to the power and speed of chlorine dioxide which takes 15 minutes.
cities that purify water use chlorine dioxide, not sodium chlorite.
